Country Fried Cauliflower – Vegan OR Vegetarian

Hey friends! I’m back with another classic family favorite, turned plant-based. This Country Fried Cauliflower is extreme vegan/vegetarian comfort food. I’m totally not advocating for you to eat this everyday, but sometimes it’s good for the soul to have an old favorite!

When I was a kid my very southern at heart father would always eat country fried steak, smothered in thick white sausage gravy. Now before my transition that was definitely up my alley whenever I went to a old school diner for breakfast or dinner. I came up with this idea after a night out, I thought it would be pretty BAD ASS to fry up a cauliflower like chicken and serve it with waffles, then I took it a step further and thought… “Country Fried Cauliflower”. Y’all, I knew I was on to something, because it wasn’t long after that night that I was back in my kitchen making this country fried cauliflower come to fruition.

I already have a pretty amazing recipe for vegan biscuits and gravy so I just knew that luscious sauce would be the perfect accompaniment to this crispy faux “steak” I was making.

Well needless to say I was definitely NOT disappointed with how this bad boy came out. It was so crispy and delicious on the outside and surprisingly didn’t taste much different from the original thing. (well besides not being a hunk of greasy meat)

I served mine with a side of simple mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. It was so GOOD! Like, so good you guys need to make this recipe on your next cheat day good. For me, it’s a total game changer.

  1. Heat up a deep fryer or 3 inches of oil in a cast iron skillet.
  2. Remove the green leaves from around the cauliflower and cut out three large steak shapes out of the head.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and almond milk. (or the vegan egg mixture with the almond milk)
  4. In a different large bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, poultry seasoning, and cajun seasoning.
  5. First dip the cauliflower steaks into the flour mixture then into the egg mixture, coating thoroughly, then back into the flour mixture, coating thoroughly again with flour. You can repeat this process once more on the cauliflower or go straight from the first dredge to the fryer.
  6. Deep fry your cauliflower until golden brown and crispy on all sides. While your cauliflower cooks make your country gravy.
  7. Once the cauliflower is finished sprinkle with a little sea salt and serve over mashed potatoes with plenty country gravy!
